MVHS track team heads to league championships
The Mill Valley track and field team Friday had its final tune-up before league play.
Despite wet conditions from Thursday's rain, the short-staffed Jaguars managed to place six individuals and set five school records at the Shawnee Mission North relays. No team scores were kept at the relays.
Three records were set on the boys' squad as senior Dominique Burgin led the way with a third place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Also setting records were junior Andrew Lee, who ran the 1600-meter event in a 4:29.2 time, and sophomore John Goodin, sixth-place medallist in the shot put.
In the high jump, junior Cody Ptacek cleared the bar at 5-10, which placed him in a four-way tie for sixth.
Top placers for the girls were junior Mindy DeGroot and senior Maike Pieper. DeGroot took second in the high jump with a 5-2 mark, while Pieper finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Mill Valley senior Angie Matlack and junior Aubrey Hale set school records, although neither placed. Matlack set a school mark with a 12:16 time in the 3200-meter run, while Hale ran a 2:32 in the 800-meter run.
Friday's event marked a homecoming for Mill Valley head coach Mark Peck, who graduated from SM North in 1972.
Next up for the Jaguars will be the Kaw Valley League Invitational on Thursday at Tonganoxie. The nine-team event will begin at 4:30 p.m.
