Mill Valley golfers look for winning season
Mill Valley golf coach Justin Bogart looks to continue the winning ways from his former school in DeSoto, but the task will not be easy.
Bogart, who coached the Wildcats to a Kaw Valley League golf title last year, only has two returning varsity members from the DeSoto squad. However, the experience of building the program will help the Jaguars in their first year on the links.
"We've had some good golf in the DeSoto schools and we've had a strong program the last three years," Bogart said. "We're hoping to continue that at Mill Valley."
Jaguar senior Lane Erickson, who qualified for the Class 5A state tournament for DeSoto last May, has visions of placing in the 4A conference this year. Erickson failed to place at the 5A meet, which was held in Salina.
"I know he didn't finish as well as he could," Bogart said. "That's going to be one of his goals this year."
Two other seniors looking to have a good season are Dwayne Bieber and Drew Wilkins. Bieber, who played at the varsity level last season, was a part of the DeSoto squad that won the Kaw Valley League last season.
"He's capable of putting up a good number," Bogart said. "He just needs to be more consistent."
Wilkins will be another Jaguar to log in some varsity time after primarily playing junior varsity at DeSoto last year,
"He was a kid last year that was always in the seven spot," Bogart said. "He kept trying to sneak in there and here. He's really looking forward to playing some varsity golf for us this year."
Other returning golf lettermen are juniors Travis Carter and Chase Maurer. Bogart noted that both should compete for varsity time this year.
The Jaguars will open up the 2001 golf season on Monday, Apr. 2 at the Gardner Invitational. Other schedule highlights include the KVL Tournament, which will be hosted by Piper on May 7 and the Class 4A Regional Tournament at Ottawa on May 14.
