Roberta Caldwell has as her guest her daughter-in-law, Toni Caldwell and grandchildren, Bret Rhiannow, Galeow, Africa, family of Mike Caldwell who works for an oil company as a geologist. Mike Caldwell will be joining them on July 23. They also will visit Toni's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jansz of Prairie Village.

Roberta Caldwell is having eye surgery this week. Callie Arnold underwent extensive eye surgery last week in Kansas City.

Jerry Nalley of Overland Park, Mike Nalley of Oklahoma City, their cousin Rhadale Huston and friend from Joplin, Mo. spent last week in Canada fishing. They had good luck and brought home lots of fish.

Mr. and Mrs. Brian Nalley of LaCygne, son of Jerry Nalley, took Jerry and me out for dinner on Father's Day.

Daisy Plumb, Olathe, formerly of De Soto, attended the funeral service of her niece near Clinton, Mo., last week with her son, Jimmy. Her brother from Texas and sister from Kansas City came also. K.O. Plumb is in an extended care home in Olathe now.

Hayden Chandler of Rantoul spent last week with me and went to Vacation Bible School.

Mr. and Mrs. Leon Coker had Myrtle's sister, Doris, from California and Bertha from Texas as houseguests. They came for the De Soto High Alumni Reunion. They make this trip yearly. The three girls are the only ones left of the Rowe family.

Robert Wilkins, who was in a serious auto accident recently, was able to attend worship services on Sunday. His mother, Mary, was able to be with him also. She is formerly from De Soto.

Betty Hughey had two grandchildren graduate this year. Rich Hughey's daughter from Kansas University and Cindy's daughter from high school in Colorado. Betty was at each one's graduation.

De Soto Baptist Church had their Vacation Bible School program during morning worship services on Sunday, June 17. It was a great week with 93 present on Wednesday. We had sunshine each day, too. The collections each day went to the Indian children's homes in Muskogee, Okla., a mission station of Baptists.

The father and son breakfast on June 17 at De Soto Baptist Church was well attended.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Verrill have their son, Roger, his wife and daughter as their guests this week from Virginia. Roger Verrill Jr. is stationed on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Eisenhower. They had dedication services for their daughter, Tiffany, at their assembly in Kansas City, Kan., on Sunday.

Don't forget the De Soto Methodist Vacation Bible School this week, ending June 22. Also, the picnic is at 4 p.m., June 22 at Miller Park. Bring food to share. Drinks and tableware will be furnished. They plan to eat at 6 p.m.

The 34th annual Carlin Nalley Invitational track meet in Lisle, Ill., was quite honored this year with Olympic star Carl Lewis being present. Lewis has won nine gold medals in Olympic track competitions.

There were 37 teams with over 800 athletes competing in this event. Only the state meet has more athletes. When Carlin left Kansas after nine years of teaching and coaching, he went to Lisle and started their first track meets. They honored him by naming it for him. He retired as school superintendent three years ago.
