Services for Elmer Leroy Torneden, 83, Lawrence, were held Monday, June 18, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Torneden died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 5, 1918, in Linwood, the son of Julius H. and Louesea (Lucken) Torneden.

Mr. Torneden served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in the anti-aircraft division.

He moved to Lawrence in 1945 and was a production supervisor for U.S. Industrial Chemical Co., De Soto, for 33 years before he retired in 1983.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Lawrence, and a volunteer for the Senior Center and Boys & Girls Club, both of Lawrence.

He married Ada Bryan on Dec. 31, 1942, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Annette Dietz and Pat Steffens, both of Lawrence; a sister, Arleta Stewart, Lawrence; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Karen Hunter, died in 1975.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association, Hospice Care of Douglas County or Central United Methodist Church, sent in care of the mortuary.
