Mill Valley in midst of three-game losing streak
Jaguars lose opening game in Basehor Invitational
Although their current three-game losing streak has Mill Valley wondering when they will register a win again, Monday's opening-round 63-50 loss to St. Joseph-Benton at the Basehor-Linwood Invitational seemed like an eternity.
Only leading for a brief moment in the first quarter, the Jaguars quickly fell behind and never could get the advantage back.
That deficit lingered for ages, it seemed, as in the fourth quarter when St. Joseph went to the line 30 times, connecting on 16 of those attempts.
St. Joseph-Benton was able to control the game on the boards as they jumped out to an 18-9 lead early in the second quarter. Mill Valley reduced the lead to three several times, but that was as close as the Jaguars would get.
"We didn't know much about them, but after looking at them in warm-ups, we could tell they were an athletic team. They really outhustled us in the first quarter by beating us on the offensive and defensive boards, which dug us in a hole and we couldn't get out of that hole."
The Jaguars missed the presence of junior point guard Cody Ptacek, who sat out the game with a groin pull injury. Travis Chavez also was missing for most of the contest with an illness and did not practice this weekend, but Bogart refused to use the void of the 6-1 junior as an excuse.
"We're lacking leadership right now," Bogart said. "Someone has got to step up and I challenged them here after the game. I don't care if it's a sophomore, a junior or a senior.
"Someone has to take the reins while Cody is down," he added. "Without that, it's going to be a long stretch."
With the loss, the Jaguars can finish no higher than fifth place in the Basehor Tournament. The Jaguars (4-3) faced the loser of Tuesday's Fort Scott-Pembroke Hill game on Wednesday. Results were not available at press time.
