Winning week for DeSoto/Mill Valley wrestlers
DeSoto/Mill Valley wrestlers will take some much deserved time off this weekend after posting a couple of big wins last week.
The team competed in a dual match Thursday against Piper and Topeka-Highland Park. Piper hosted the match.
DeSoto/Mill Valley came out on top in both matches, beating Topeka-Highland Park 48-29 and outscoring Piper 54-27.
DeSoto/Mill Valley coach Travis Keal said the win over Piper was a big one for the team, giving them a league record of 2-0.
The team followed up Thursday's performance with another impressive showing at the Louisburg Tournament on Saturday.
"We finished fourth out of eight teams," Keal said. "But the best part was the fact that 12 of 14 of our wrestlers placed in the tournament."
Dustin Stinnett (215) turned in the best performance with a second-place finish.
Josh Hammond (145), Eric Pingelton (171), Nick Ingala (189) and David Davis (heavyweight) finished third in their weight classes.
Several wrestlers finished fourth in their class, including Brett Yates (103), Joey Wilson (112), Chris Kiler (125), Ryan Ray (130), Cole Saylors (135) and Matt Hess (140).
The success of last week should set the team up nicely for its dual match against Fort Scott and Ottawa Thursday at Fort Scott.
"It's not a league match, but it's nice to have a little momentum going in anyway," Keal said.
On the 18th, the team will host Leavenworth Immaculata and Perry-Lecompton at Mill Valley. The dual matches will begin at 5:30 p.m.
