Deputy wounded in Monday shootout
A Johnson County Sheriff's deputy was wounded in the hand during a Monday night shootout in DeSoto's Wilderness Park.
Lt. Calvin Hayden of the Johnson County Sheriff's Department said that Deputy Charles Black was treated and released from Olathe Medial Center for a bullet wound to his hand. The 34-year-old Black is a 12-year veteran of the department.
Hayden said Black left his vehicle during a routine patrol of the park at about 11:20 p.m. While Black was on foot, a dark-colored full-sized pickup pulled up next to the deputy.
The passenger in the pickup pointed a rifle at Black and fired. The deputy was able to return fire, Hayden said.
"We don't have any suspects yet," Hayden said. "We're working on it. It's a priority."
Black identified the pickup as a late 1970s or early 1980s American-made truck, but was unable to specify the make or model.
Black was only able to give a description of the passenger in the pickup. He was described as a white man in his 20s with brown or dark blonde hair and a short growth of facial hair.
The sheriff's department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
