DeSoto edges Tonganoxie, 1-0
One fluke goal was all the DeSoto Wildcats could muster against Tonganoxie last Thursday in a game that was a struggle from the start.
The one fluke goal was enough.
A 1-0 victory over the Chieftains improved the Wildcats to 4-1 this season.
"It was just a really hard-fought battle," said DeSoto coach Mike Murphy. "They had 17 seniors on the team and were able to control the midfield much more than we were.
We played great defense and forced them to take some bad shots."
DeSoto also had several shots, but couldn't put the game-winning goal into the net until about 15 minutes into the second half.
After receiving a cross, Tracy Peters took a shot. It seemed a little wide so Paul Seaman tried to head it in, but Tongie tried to clear it. Peters was there, however. This time his shot was on the mark and DeSoto scored the game's only goal.
It was one of the few scoring chances for the Wildcats, who spent most of the first half on the defensive side of the field.
"It looked like they were going to muscle their way down to our goal," Seaman said. "They were a very physical team but we were able to fend them off. I figured we would beat them by more than we did."
With the shutout, the Wildcats were able to wash away the bad aftertaste of a lopsided loss to Mill Valley the week before. DeSoto is currently in third place in the Kaw Valley League standings.
