New shop offers an international flavor
Customers will find the small interior of DeSoto's newest business houses a world of experiences.
Friday, Felix Briseno opened Felix's International Foods and Products at 33570 Lexington Ave. On hand for the store's ribbon cutting, DeSoto Chamber of Commerce President Pat Atchison said the store demonstrates the growing importance of the Hispanic community to DeSoto.
It is a community that has been eagerly awaiting the opening of the store stocked with products from Mexico, Briseno said.
"Before we opened, you had to go to Kansas City, Kan., to get these products," she said. "They tell us it's about time somebody opened up a Mexican store here in DeSoto.
"We will get people from Lawrence, Leavenworth, Ottawa and Johnson County. Already today (Friday), we had people come in from Shawnee, Kansas City, Kan., and Cedar Creek."
Customers will find dried peppers, canned goods, sausages and cheeses that will add flavor and authenticity to homemade Mexican food, Briseno said. Other products include laundry soap, Spanish language video rentals and CDs.
Although merchandise from Mexico dominates the shelves, customers will also find products from China, Japan and Jordan.
"International products just like the sign says," Briseno said, adding that she would like to add more international goods to her inventory.
Hungry customers can leave the store sated thanks to the hot tamales prepared there by Briseno's mother, Ruth Briseno. If that isn't enough, the store carries brightly colored Mexican pastries. The food can be washed down with Mexican soft drinks chilled in the store's cooler.
Briseno's brother Joel also lends a hand at the store, which the siblings see as a memorial to their father.
"This was a dream of my father's," Briseno said. "He wanted to get into this business in Wichita. We decided to do it here, since we've lived here the last four years."
Someday, the family may offer DeSoto residents a greater taste of what can be prepared from the products available at the store. Felix said the family would like to open a Mexican restaurant.
"That's something we want to do," she said. "It's another dream."
