Santa Claus to visit DeSoto — at least twice

Two visits from Santa Claus will highlight this weekend`s start of DeSoto`s holiday season.

The big weekend of holiday activities will get underway this Saturday at Starside Elementary. Starting at 9 a.m., children can tell the jolly old elf what they want for Christmas at a breakfast with Santa. The Starside PTA will also host a crafts fair and Santa`s secret workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Holiday happenings will continue with the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce`s annual holiday party at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the DeSoto Community Center.

Santa will be back in town with his wife Sunday. The couple will be part of the festivities marking the lighting of the mayor`s Christmas tree.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at the DeSoto Community Center. The lighting ceremony will include Christmas carols by the Madrigals of DeSoto High School and the DeSoto Brownie troop. It will be followed by more music and refreshments in the Senior Center.

Sunday, Dec.10 -- DeSoto Methodist Church children`s program, 10:30 a.m. DeSoto Baptist Church Junior Joy Singers Christmas presentation, 11 a.m.

Thursday, Dec. 14 -- Lexington Trails Middle School band concert, 6:30 p.m. DeSoto High School holiday music concert, 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 17 -- Christmas Contata, 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., DeSoto Methodist Church, and 7 p.m., DeSoto Baptist Church. Kaw Valley Community Chorus winter concert 3 p.m., at the DeSoto Community Center. Tickets for the concert are $5 and part of the proceeds will be shared with the DeSoto Volunteer Fire Department`s Thermal Imaging Fund.

Sunday, Dec. 24 -- DeSoto Methodist Church Christmas Eve services 5 and 11 p.m.
