New Super 8 motel almost ready for business

March 2, 2000

DeSoto's first national chain motel will open its doors early this month.

The Super 8 motel, located at 34085 Commerce Drive, will have 43 rooms, ranging in price from about $50 to $79 per night. Its sign will be visible from the highway and, motel manager Terry Cunning, believes it will bring business travelers to town.

"To get the same thing in Lawrence or Kansas City, you would pay $105 to $110 per night," Cunning said. "It's definitely going to be worth the trip for people doing business in those two cities."

Cunning said he also expects his motel help attract new business to the DeSoto area.

"We are helping provide infrastructure for the K-10 area," he said. "It's one of the things businesses look for when they are choosing a place to locate. You need things like roads and manpower, but you also need clean, well-managed places to stay."

The motel, owned by Missouri residents John and Naomi Porter and sons, Jason and Jared, will be state of the art, Cunning said. Each room will have a microwave oven, a refrigerator and an iron and ironing board. Each room also will have a recliner and a color television with cable channels.

A top priority of the motel staff will be the safety of their guests, Cunning said. All room doors are controlled by electronic locks, which can be activated only by the person renting the room. Cunning said the hallways and the parking lot will always be well-lit and security cameras have been placed on each floor and entrance.

Guests will receive a free continental breakfast and have access to laundry facilities and a weight room. The front desk will be open 24 hours a day, Cunning said.

Motel officials will target business travelers Monday through Thursday and focus more on families on the weekends, Cunning explained. He said he believes bringing business travelers into DeSoto will produce revenue for DeSoto's existing businesses.

"We're within walking distance of four restaurants and two of them deliver," he said.

Cunning could not give the exact date of the hotel's opening, only that it would be soon. He said the motel would have an open house soon after opening.
