To help the public and professionals understand what causes eating disorders in young people and adults, Johnson County Community College is hosting a conference, “Eating Disorders: Beyond Diagnosis and Treatment,” from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the Capitol Federal Conference Center of the Regnier Center at the college, 12345 College Blvd., Overland Park.
The conference will explore issues of parenting and family systems, prevention and intervention in schools, and how dieting is related to the development of eating disorders. Recognized experts will present case examples.
In addition, the conference will address the notion that many weight-loss methods contribute to the development of disordered eating, as well as intervention techniques clinicians can use to stop unhealthy weight loss or weight control methods before they become eating disorders.
RNs, PNS, social workers, counselors and dietitians will earn 6.5 contact hours. Approval is pending for PTs and OTs.
Cost is $15 for the general public, or $88 for continuing education credit. For more information, call (913) 469-3811.
